Many horse owners know it: The frugal horse gets its measured roughage – perhaps in a chicken coop with small mesh, perhaps just as a portion on the ground – but still seems hungry, dissatisfied and angry . Why?
Why does this happen?
-
Too little chewing time : When roughage is limited, there are hours a day when the horse is left without anything to chew on.
-
Too little fiber : Frugal horses often get less energy - but if they only get wrap/hay in small amounts, they lack the fiber that fills them up and provides satiety.
-
Too little protein : Low-protein forages do not always meet the horse's needs, even though the energy and sugar content may already be sufficient . This can make the horse more "hungry" because the body is demanding nutrients, not calories.
What can you do?
-
Add straw
Straw provides plenty of chewing time, is filling and provides fiber – without the horse getting too many calories. -
Supplement with protein
Many frugal horses lack protein. For example, add:-
1–2 kg alfalfa or green pellets
-
1–1.5 kg +Fiber Mash
-
or simply about 300 g soy flour
-
-
Ensure vitamins and minerals
A good vitamin and mineral supplement is necessary, regardless of which roughage strategy you choose. -
Salt and water
Remember daily salt and always free access to fresh water.
👉 This way you can give the horse satiety, calmness and balance in the body - without it gaining weight.
The combination of straw + protein (e.g. 300 g soy meal) + vitamins/minerals is the key to making the frugal horse happier and less hungry.
