Choose the right vitamin and mineral supplement for your horse
What are vitamins and minerals – and why are they important?
Vitamins and minerals are small but essential nutrients that the horse cannot produce in sufficient quantities itself.
They are included in:
- Building and maintaining bones, muscles and hooves
- Support for energy metabolism and immune system
- A shiny coat and general good well-being
👉 Even the best roughage rarely covers all the vitamin and mineral needs. That's why all horses need a daily supplement - regardless of age, breed or work level.
The foundation of feeding
Roughage (grass, wrap, hay and possibly straw) is always the foundation of the horse's feeding.
But roughage alone is not enough vitamins and minerals .
👉 Therefore, all horses – regardless of age and work – have a vitamin and mineral supplement.
Which product should you choose?
- Every Day Happy (EDH): for most horses in light–moderate work
- Peak Performance (PP): suitable for periods of hard work or rehabilitation, where increased demands are placed on the energy and protein supply in relation to the horse's current load
- Supreme Minerals: when you only want to supplement the roughage with pure vitamins and minerals
Daily dosage per 100 kg body weight
At Regulator Complete we recommend as a starting point: Extra dosage .
👉 This is because few horse owners have a roughage analysis, and we often see in the roughage analyses that the roughage in Denmark does not contain enough of the important microminerals.
Giving too little can be costly in the long run – both in the form of poor hoof and fur quality, low resilience and more bills for the vet and farrier.
Therefore, our recommendation is: it is better to cover a little extra than to risk shortages.
(Light work: 3–15 years / Senior +15 years)
| Product | 3–15 years | Seniors +15 years |
|---|---|---|
| Supreme Minerals | 17g | 20g |
| Happy every day | 65g | 80g |
| Peak Performance | 65g | 80g |
👉 How to do it: Find the horse's weight and walk up.
Example: 500 kg horse → times 5.

When can you use Normal dosage?
You can choose Normal dosage in Regulator Complete's dosage chart if you have a roughage analysis that shows that the mineral content is at least around these values (dry matter basis):
- Copper: 4–5 mg/kg
- Zinc: 20–22 mg/kg
- Manganese: 40–50 mg/kg
- Iron: 100–110 mg/kg
👉 Note: Only 10–15% of the iron from roughage is absorbed by the horse.
If the iron content in the roughage is lower than average – which is often the case in Denmark – we recommend increasing the dosage of Regulator Complete's vitamin and mineral supplement to the extra level.
👉 Without a mineral analysis, it is difficult to know whether the roughage covers enough - therefore, we generally recommend Extra dosage to be on the safe side.
Foals and young horses
0–5 months: 1 g per kg of body weight per day of either Every Day Happy or Peak Performance
From 6 months/disease: as adults (3–15 years), but based on the expected adult weight

Increased support during special periods
There are times when the horse needs some extra vitamins and minerals, for example:
- During the moulting season → greater demands on fur and skin
- At rallies or transportation → stress, sweat loss and strain increase
- When the horse is stressed → e.g. due to illness, harder training or change of environment
👉 In these situations, you can increase the dosage of EDH, PP or SM by 50-60% for a total of a few days up to 4–6 weeks.
Then you return to the normal daily dosage.
