Salt and fluid balance
What is salt?
Salt is one of the most important – but often forgotten – building blocks in horse feeding.
Without salt, neither fluid balance, muscles nor nerves function optimally.
How much salt should my horse have?
👉 Dosage per 100 kg body weight per day:
- Maintenance/light work: 10–13g
- Hard work, breastfeeding or hot weather: up to double
➡️ A horse weighing 500 kg therefore needs approx. 50–65 g of salt daily – and in some situations even more.
Important to know
- One Rock salt is not enough alone – most horses lick it too little.
- Therefore, give the salt in the manger so you know that the horse is getting what it needs.
- Salt can be easily mixed in Mash together with Every Day Happy, Peak Performance or Supreme Minerals .
- When feeding with RC's vitamin and mineral products, it is recommended to give approx. 10 g extra salt per 100 kg body weight per day – in addition to access to salt rock.
When does the horse need extra salt?
- After training or competition → helps replace lost salts and fluids
- In hot weather → supports the horse in regulating sweat and temperature
- During transportation → increases fluid intake so the horse does not become dehydrated
👉 Enough salt is a simple but crucial factor for your horse's health, energy and well-being.
