Can rapeseed oil replace algae oil in horses with eczema?

August 5, 2025Ingeborg Rahbek Pedersen

Omega 3 or 6 – what does the horse actually need?

Can you use rapeseed oil instead of algae oil? And what is the difference? That question appeared in our Facebook group recently – and here you will get a comprehensive overview of what the different oils can do, and how you can best support your horse's skin, immune system and well-being.

Short answer: No – the two oils cannot do the same thing.

If your horse has eczema, itching, sensitive skin or signs of imbalance , you should go for omega-3 from algae oil . This type of fatty acid supports the body's own ability to dampen reactions and restore balance.

Rapeseed oil can be a good supplement – especially for the skin's barrier and moisture balance – but it cannot replace algae oil when it comes to actively supporting the horse's reactions and tissues.

What is the difference between omega-3 and omega-6?

Most oils consist of several types of fatty acids, and omega-3 and omega-6 in particular play important roles in the horse's health:

Fatty acid

Function

Typical sources

Especially effective on

Omega-3 (ALA, DHA, EPA)

Suppresses reactions, supports immune defense and tissue building

Algae oil (DHA, EPA), flaxseed, hemp, rapeseed (ALA)

Skin, metabolism, immune function

Omega-6 (LA, AA)

Supports the skin's barrier and cell function

Grains, soybean oil, rapeseed oil, hemp oil

Skin, hormone balance, growth

The balance between omega-3 and omega-6 is crucial.
Too much omega-6 and too little omega-3 can intensify reactions in the body.

Rapeseed oil – what can it do?

Rapeseed oil contains primarily omega-9 and omega-6 , as well as about 9–10% omega-3 in the form of ALA. The body can itself convert ALA into the active forms DHA and EPA , but in horses this only happens to a limited extent – especially if the feed lacks vitamins and minerals to support the process.

Rapeseed oil is therefore great as a source of energy and as support for skin and fur , but cannot deliver the same effect as algae oil when it comes to supporting the body's own reaction to irritation and imbalance.

What can algae oil do?

Algae oil directly contains the active omega-3 forms DHA and EPA , which the horse's body can absorb immediately - without conversion.

DHA and EPA:

  • Supports the skin from within
  • Supports immune system regulation
  • Contributes to the normal function of cells and tissues

Many experience effects after just 1–2 weeks – the horse seems calmer, the itching decreases, and the skin gets a better structure.

When does it make sense to combine?

It often makes sense to use rapeseed oil as a temporary support when the body needs to refuel , for example if the horse is underweight or the skin seems dry and stressed. Once the foundation is laid, the algae oil can provide more targeted support , especially if you want to promote balance and regeneration.

Eva Lydeking explains:
“You can fill up a major oil shortage with rapeseed or hemp oil and add the algae oil for quick effect.”

What about pregnant or lactating mares?

Yes – algae oil can be given to both pregnant and lactating mares . It provides essential fatty acids for both the mare and the foal. Many choose to combine algae oil with Every Day Happy, RC Movement and soy meal to ensure that the body has the nutrients it needs to make optimal use of the oil.

Conclusion: It's not about either-or – but about using the oils correctly

Need

Recommendation

Itching, eczema, sensitive skin

Algae oil (DHA/EPA)

Dry skin, low energy, feeding

Rapeseed oil (omega 6 and 9)

Post-effect maintenance

Combination of both in small amounts

Tip: Start slowly

For large amounts of rapeseed or hemp oil (2–5 dl daily), you should start low and increase over 2–3 days so the horse can get used to it. Algae oil is generally well tolerated from the start.
