Soluble fiber in +Fiber Mash – for healthy intestinal function and immune support

August 7, 2025Ingeborg Rahbek Pedersen

When talking about fiber in horse feed, many people first think of digestion and satiety. However, certain types of fiber – the so-called soluble fiber – actually also play a role in intestinal balance and the body's own regulation.

Discover:

  • That fibers not only fill you up – they can also keep the immune system in balance

  • Why we don't have yeast in +Fiber Mash (and why it's actually a benefit)

  • That beetroot pills and citrus fiber can do more for the gut than expensive supplements

  • That the “coarse” wheat bran can create a healthier environment in the horse's intestines

  • That you can feed mash without adding unnecessary energy

  • How little it takes to strengthen your horse's intestinal flora – and your stomach's peace of mind

What is soluble fiber?

Soluble fiber is a group of fibers that can dissolve in liquid and be broken down in the horse's hindgut by microorganisms. When this happens, short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate are formed - and these compounds help to support a well-functioning intestinal flora and regulate the body's own reactions.

You can find soluble fiber in, for example:

  • Beet pulp and citrus fiber (rich in pectin)

  • Wheat bran (containing arabinoxylans)

  • Oats and yeast (which contain β-glucans*)

*Beta-glucans from yeast may be too potent and actually overstimulate the immune system.

Why not yeast?

Many products on the market contain yeast as a source of soluble fiber. However, β-glucans from yeast can activate the body's defenses very strongly. This can be useful for short periods, but for daily feeding we do not want to overstimulate the immune system.

At Regulator Complete, we have therefore chosen not to add yeast to +Fiber Mash. Instead, we use fibers such as pectin and arabinoxylans, which provide a more calm and balanced effect in the intestine – without unnecessary strain on the immune system.

What does this mean for the horse?

Research from other animal species shows that soluble fiber can have an impact on how the body responds to stress situations and how the intestinal flora affects systemic functions.

For example, you have seen:

  • Pectin can promote balanced immune responses and support calm intestinal function.

  • Arabinoxylans contribute to the formation of butyrate and can influence the intestinal environment in a favorable direction.

  • β-glucans can activate the body's defenses, but their effect depends on quantity and consistency.

Why choose +Fiber Mash?

At Regulator Complete, we have developed +Fiber Mash with a focus on fiber that supports both digestion and balance. It is a low-calorie mash product with no added vitamins/minerals, which can therefore be used flexibly with, for example, Every Day Happy or Peak Performance.

✅ Contains:

  • Beetroot and citrus peel → natural sources of pectin

  • Wheat bran and soy hulls → with arabinoxylans and coarse fibers

  • Low sugar and starch (3–5%) → suitable for frugal horses

  • No high levels of β-glucans – to avoid unnecessary activation

  • Herbal blend (Herbal Fusion #1) → provides variety in taste and aroma

When can it make sense?

+Fiber Mash is suitable for horses that:

  • Need extra fiber, but not extra energy

  • Thrives on straw-based hay and needs a supplement for microbial activity in the gut

  • Want to be fed for peace and balance – e.g. during periods of change in stable, feed or environment

Convenient dosage

Used together with straw feed and vitamin/mineral supplements.

Dosage: approx. 50–500 g per 100 kg horse per day , soaked in 1 part mash to 4–5 parts water.

Easy to handle and mix – even for larger horse farms.
