Supreme Minerals and amino acids – what does it mean for your horse?
Supreme Minerals is a strong mineral and vitamin supplement that ensures that the horse meets its needs for the most important micronutrients.
But it is important to be aware that Supreme Minerals does not contain the essential amino acids Lysine, Methionine and Threonine .
Why are amino acids important?
Amino acids are the building blocks of protein – and Lysine, Methionine and Threonine in particular are essential for:
- 💪 Muscles – building, recovery and strength
- 🐴 Hoof and skin – keratin, collagen and tissue building
- 🛡️ Immune defense – formation of antibodies and the body's ability to resist disease
If the horse lacks these amino acids, it can lead to:
- Poor muscle tone or slow recovery
- Fragile hooves and poor hoof growth
- Weakened resistance
Does the horse get amino acids through roughage?
Yes – grass, wrap and hay contain amino acids.
But the content depends on the quality and whether the field has been fertilized .
- 🌱 Unfertilized fields → lower protein, lower content of lysine, methionine and threonine.
- 🌱 Fertilized fields → higher protein and greater likelihood that the need will be met.
Example: 100 kg horse
A 100 kg horse needs approximately 140–150 g of crude protein per day (equivalent to 1.4–1.5 g per kg body weight).
|
Roughage type |
Protein content |
Result at 2 kg per 100 kg horse |
Does it meet the need? |
|
Unfertilized wrap – 6% crude protein (DM 70%) |
42 g per kg → 2 kg = 84 g |
❌ Missing approx. 60 g |
|
|
Fertilized wrap – 10% crude protein (DM 70%) |
70 g per kg → 2 kg = 140 g |
✔️ Covers the need |
👉 For a 400 kg horse , the difference will be significant:
- Unfertilized wrap → approx. 336 g crude protein (missing ~240 g)
- Fertilized wrap → approx. 560 g crude protein (needs almost covered)
How can the deficiency be covered?
If the horse is fed roughage from unfertilized fields , it is often necessary to supplement with a protein source that contains the essential amino acids:
- Soybean meal – rich in lysine and threonine
- Lucerne – good source of methionine and supports hooves and skin
- Combination – e.g. wrap + soy + alfalfa gives a better amino acid balance
In short
✅ Supreme Minerals covers vitamins and minerals – but not amino acids .
✅ Amino acids must come from roughage and possibly supplements.
✅ Be aware that unfertilized fields provide lower protein content in the roughage.
✅ Supplement with soy, alfalfa or both if roughage is not enough.
This way, the horse gets both micronutrients and the building blocks it needs for muscles, hooves and immune system 💚
