Hove i dårlig kvalitet? Hvorfor biotin sjældent er nok – og hvad kroppen egentlig har brug for

Poor quality hooves? Why biotin is rarely enough – and what the body actually needs

July 2, 2025Ingeborg Rahbek Pedersen

Crumbling hoof walls, cracks, low-quality soles and shoes that don't stay put. Many horse owners are familiar with the problem of hooves that can't hold up very well. But instead of just looking at the hooves from the outside, it's worth asking the question:

🔍 What is the body lacking since it cannot form strong, resistant horn?

Because bad hooves are rarely just about the hoof itself. It's about what the body has available to build it up. And it starts with nutrition.

👩🌾 The body builds horns from the inside

The quality of the hoof depends on what the body has access to day by day. The horn is formed by living cells, and it requires:

  • Good quality protein
  • Vitamins and minerals in the right amounts
  • Fatty acids and building blocks for cell membranes
  • Bowel function and absorption that works

If any of these factors are missing, the quality will decrease. The hoof will become dry, brittle, crumbly or soft. And the solution is rarely just biotin.

💼 Biotin? Yes, but it's only a small part of the picture

Biotin has been highlighted as the most important factor for hoof quality for many years. However, newer knowledge and practice show that it rarely stands alone.

Biotin helps form keratin and supports cell renewal. But it only works if the body also has:

  • Enough zinc, copper and sulfur-containing amino acids
  • Sufficient protein and energy
  • Well-functioning intestinal flora and absorption

Both Every Day Happy and Peak Performance contain biotin – but they also contain everything needed for biotin to be beneficial.

Biotin without the other building blocks is like a brick without mortar.

🧵 The most important building blocks for strong hooves

1. Protein

The structure of the hoof is based on proteins such as keratin. Without enough good quality protein, the body cannot form strong horn.

Signs of protein deficiency can be:

  • Slow horn growth
  • Crumbling or soft hoof wall
  • Reduced elasticity and durability

Every Day Happy and Peak Performance contain easily digestible protein, including essential amino acids such as lysine , methionine and threonine from flaxseed, among others. You can supplement with e.g. alfalfa or soybean meal if necessary, especially if the protein content of the roughage is low.

2. Minerals

Zinc and copper are crucial for horn quality. They are involved in enzyme processes that form the structure of the hoof.

Manganese, sulfur and selenium also play important roles. It is not enough that they are present in the feed – they must be in the right proportions and forms for the body to utilize them.

3. Fatty acids

Essential fatty acids like omega-3 support cell membranes and moisture balance in the hoof, contributing to suppleness and resilience.

RC O3 Algae Oil is a good source of omega-3 – and is free of heavy metals and pollution.

4. Digestion and absorption

Even the best food only works if it is absorbed. Therefore:

  • +Fiber Mash important as support for intestinal flora and function
  • Allocation of salt necessary for fluid balance and nutrient absorption

🚫 When the shoes don't fit and biotin doesn't work

If you have tried giving biotin without effect, you are not alone. Many horses need a more holistic approach, where several pieces are in place at the same time.

At Regulator Complete we recommend starting with:

Every Day Happy or Peak Performance

  • RC O3 Algae Oil
  • +Fiber Mash
  • Salt

And supplement with extra protein (e.g. alfalfa or soybean meal) if the protein content of the roughage is deficient.

📆 Patience and systematicity work

The visible part of the hoof is “dead” tissue – so changes come gradually as new hoof grows in. It typically takes 6–12 months to see a noticeable difference.

But when the body gets what it needs, things start to change:

  • The hoof grows faster and stronger
  • The horn becomes more elastic and resilient
  • Shoes fit better
